Chef B's rendang (Indonesian beef curry) truly is THE BEST in US! I've tried rendang dish from Indonesian restaurants across US as well as home catering, cultural markets, you name it but no one ever comes close to Chef B's! Growing up in Indonesia, I know that this national dish takes no shortcut to get it just right with such complex flavor and perfect texture - Chef B nails it so perfectly that I can feel the love and passion he puts into his cooking. My kids are familiar with rendang dish but they would only eat it if it's absolutely not spicy. Chef B's rendang has some spiciness (again the perfect amount of kick) but my kids said they don't mind the heat/spiciness at all if the dish is this good! His other dishes are truly phenomenal too! The restaurant itself is really beautiful, decorated with many Indonesian traditional art pieces and I marveled at the attention to detail. The decor really is a work of love by Chef B's wife, Leslie. Coming to this restaurant, it feels like you're being welcomed by friends to their home. Chef B and Leslie, the owners were very very gracious and their staffs were friendly and kind. It was easily one of the best meals and we're very lucky to experience Blue Toba. This restaurant is such a gem in Ashland, OR!! I only wish Houston, TX - Ashland, OR is not that far! :)

Dropped in early in the dinner hours, and we were promptly seated. The menu seems streamlined, with excellent Indonesian dishes that one might call classics. The rendang was a surprise for its tenderness and multiple flavors within. The soup was another highlight. Staff was friendly, and the service timely. For downtown Ashland, prices are more than reasonable. Looking forward to trying more dishes soon!

We celebrated my fathers birthday dinner at Blue Toba. I've been eating here well before they moved, but this was my first time back since the move. The food is exactly as I remember it. The meat in my dish was tender & flavorful. The fried rice dish that my son had was new to the menu & incredible! My father also had the fried rice & ate every bite. This is a great restaurant to support!!

We were planning for just a casual night out and a quick dinner. We were thinking Charm for Thai or Blue Toba and decided to walk down to town to give it a try. It had been on our list and we had heard good things from friends. I had always been drawn to the beautiful interior space as well. What was intended as a casual evening out ended up being almost a sacred dining experience. The interior is so stunning, and the decor really adds to the authenticity of what they're doing with the menu and presentation. The owner was so helpful in educating us about Indonesian food, which I had never tried myself... my partner was more familiar. She helped us understand the very intentional way the chef, her husband, takes in preparing the food for this restaurant every day. Just something as simple as the rice she says is more of a ceremonial style of preparation. That, and all of the food is organic and so many options for a vegetarian like myself. There is so much about this experience that resonated with me, and I felt so nourished by the food, the mellow vibe, the delicious, perfectly seasoned, and prepared food (which also interestingly satisfied my craving for Thai food that night) and the wonderful tea that I had. I felt like I had more of a cultural experience than just a simple meal. You can tell that this dining experience has been carefully created and is driven by pure love and passion. This is a rare and yet palpable energy, and I am so grateful that it exists here in little Ashland. We are going to recommend this to our friends and guests and will make it a regular dining spot for ourselves throughout the year.

Our whole dining experience was a series of delights, and I’ll be dreaming of this place until we return to Ashland someday. The Rendang was a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, nuanced explosion of flavor; the mocktails were bright and refreshing; the ambiance was soothing and full of charm; and everyone who works there was kind and quick to offer helpful and intriguing information. I loved getting to learn about the ceremonial yellow rice that is served here, and it reinforced the feeling that, in dining here, you have been luckily invited to a ceremony or a special family meal. This place is a gift and a gem - I’ll be back as soon as possible to try everything on the menu!

We are so excited to have found this gem. It will be our number one dinner stop whenever we are in Ashland from now on. We loved the food and drinks, the calming atmosphere and the attentive enthusiastic service. Our favorite foods from this visit were the Bakwan Jagung (corn fritters), the Mie Goreng ( fried noodles) and the Black Rice Pudding. The cocktails were also not to be missed. As a bonus we arrived at 4:30 for discounted drinks and appetizers (the Bakwan Jagung) from the happy hour menu. The Bersama Kita was like an aromatic spiced Manhattan and the Matahariku resembled a mai tai with a hint of banana. Both drinks were great but the drink that blew our socks off was kind of a creative project between us and the bartender. It was the Coconut Bajigur, a great non alcoholic option, but with a shot of Flor de Cana rum added. Wow! Like a tropical eggnog but so much better. One of the best cocktails we have ever had. We highly recommend this restaurant for drinks and happy hour and for dinner.

Owner chef does an excellent job with presenting his Indonesian cuisine. Everything we ate was delicious. They have a non alcoholic drink of cucumber and lime that is so refreshing. Get the forbidden rice dessert, a great way to end you experience?

Our experience started outside as a woman we met on the street began raving about the food at this restaurant. As a couple from LA passing through Ashland we were looking for a good local spot. We had no idea we were about to stumble into what is perhaps the best authentic Indonesian food in the United States. Everything is homemade, spiced to perfection (we learned that one of our dishes was spiced with over a dozen Indonesian spices and cooked for 5 hour, while being stirred every 15 minutes). We had a lovely chat with Leslie who co-owns the restaurant with her husband and chef (who is apparently an absolute sweet heart and culinary perfectionist) and she told us about the years she lived in Indonesia. Her husband makes each dish into this amazing masterful blend of taste and texture and we highly recommend the creamy beef Rendang (it’s hard to even describe the delicious complexity of the taste), the tender chicken Ayam Bakar (my girlfriend despises chicken on the bone and she confided that this was her favorite dish of the meal), and the crunchy corn fritters (also, wonderfully spiced). If you’re in town, please check this place out. You’re welcome in advance
